UNSMIL calls for immediate release of Ahmed Sanusi, highlights broader issue of political detentions
'Stifling journalists' reporting fosters a climate of fear and undermines the environment needed for Libya's democratic transition," warns UNSMIL.
Tripoli, Libya – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has raised serious concerns over the recent arbitrary arrest and detention of journalist Ahmed Sanusi in Tripoli. Sanussi, known for his reporting on allegations of government corruption, was apprehended by security forces on Thursday, local media reported.
In a statement released on social media platform X, UNSMIL emphasized the detrimental impact such actions have on the country’s democratic transition. “Stifling journalists’ reporting fosters a climate of fear and undermines the environment needed for Libya’s democratic transition,” the statement read.
UNSMIL highlighted the importance of a vibrant civic space where citizens can engage in open and safe debate. “A thriving civic space, where Libyans can engage in open and safe debate and dialogue exercising their right to freedom of expression, is essential,” it stated, calling for the immediate release of Sanusi and the protection of journalists and media workers.
The mission also shed light on the broader issue of detentions across the country. In a statement issued earlier this week, UNSMIL documented cases of at least 60 individuals currently detained for their actual or perceived political affiliations. It warned that the real number of those detained for peacefully expressing their political views might be significantly higher.
Libya has been in a state of turmoil since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, grappling with escalating violence, insecurity, and political instability. The arrest of Sanussi marks another troubling chapter in the country’s ongoing struggle for democratic governance and freedom of expression.
The international community, including UNSMIL, continues to call for the protection of fundamental human rights in Libya, urging the government to uphold the rule of law and create a safe environment for journalists and citizens alike to voice their opinions without fear of retribution.
