The arrest took place in response to an arrest warrant issued in 2020, citing the sexual exploitation of a minor girl residing as a nun in his ashram in the Bara district.
Background: From Jungle Retreat to Spiritual Prominence
Ram Bahadur Bomjan gained international attention nearly two decades ago when, at the age of 15, he retreated into the jungle for a 10-month prayer session, reportedly without food, sleep, or water. Although these claims were never independently verified, his followers hailed him as the possible reincarnation of Siddhartha Gautama, or Buddha.
The moniker ‘Buddha Boy‘ propelled Bomjan to fame, attracting thousands from Nepal and neighbouring India to witness his spiritual practices in the jungle. He later began preaching and established a network of ashrams dedicated to his teachings.
Allegations and Controversies
In recent years, Bomjan has faced various allegations, including the disappearance of four of his followers, leading to a 2019 raid on his ashram. The current arrest is linked to sexual abuse charges brought forth by a nun in 2018, accusing Bomjan of raping her at one of his ashrams when she was a minor.
Bodhi Shrawan Dharma Sangha, the organization managing Bomjan’s ashrams, previously denied the rape allegations during a news conference in 2018, asserting that they were “completely made-up.”
