After Facebook, tech giant Microsoft step into the universe of the metaverse

Microsoft registers itself into the metaverse race as it introduces three-dimensional avatars and immersive meeting rooms.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has launched 3D avatars and immersive meeting rooms to step into the metaverse universe.  The tech giant has introduced a collaborative virtual platform that would combine Hololens meeting with mixed reality.

Microsoft follows Facebook in the metaverse race

”As the digital and physical worlds come together, we are creating an entirely new platform layer, which is the metaverse. In a sense, the metaverse enables us to embed computing into the real world and embed the real world into computing, bringing real presence to any digital space,” Nadella said.

The company will update its Teams app to push its employees and new hires towards participating in the metaverse environment. The news of Microsoft joining the race comes after Facebook changed its name to the Meta platform as a token to show its expanding focus on developing a metaverse.

The growing popularity of metaverse

The term metaverse broadly means an idea of a shared virtual platform that people can access through any device and move through the digital environments.  The concept surged in popularity during the covid lockdown as people shifted to the digital world for both pleasure and work. In the term metaverse, the prefix Meta means beyond. Thus it means beyond the universe, used to describe virtual space in the online world.

Microsoft also owns Xbox and Minecraft, the key player in the gaming world. In the gaming world, Fortnite-owned Epic Games has also said that the company had raised $1 billion in funding to support infrastructure for the metaverse.

In this upcoming digital world, online spaces, lands and buildings could be brought using cryptocurrency. “People across multiple companies can easily collaborate as one extended team, chatting, collaborating on files, and scheduling meetings with the right access necessary to do their work,” Nadella added. With the help of augmented reality glass, people might get their daily updates while walking in the park. It might also allow people to create their three-dimensional avatars to shop in exchange for real cash.
