A Mani Ratnam movie without Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the cast seems like a rarity these days. Ever since Aishwarya had made her debut in Mani Ratnam’s magnim opus Iruvar, a movie that had stunning performances from Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and actor extraordinaire Prakash Raj, the former Miss World has been a regular in the Tamil film maker’s projects.

He might have missed casting her in a couple of flicks post-Iruvar, but Aishwarya is much loved by the south cinema world for her portrayal of characters Mani Ratnam had given her. She was much applauded for her performance in Mani’s 2007 film Guru and the 2010 flick Raavan. These films also had her husband Abhishek Bachchan in the cast.

Ponniyin Selvan based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is back again to charm the audiences through the latest project that has Mani Ratnam at the helm. The film, titled Ponniyin Selvan, is a period drama and is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s popular historical novel with the same name.

Though there had been much buzz about Ponniyin Selvan during the time of its making, and Aishwarya has got netizens go into a frenzy by sharing a digital poster of the film. The poster has the actress looking stunning, dressed in a red and gold saree. She posted on Twitter that “the golden era comes to the big screens on September 30th”.

The poster has excited fans of cinema and they are going gaga on social media praising the project and Aishwarya’s on-screen look. Produced by Lyca Productions, the Mani Ratnam directorial has a mega line up of actors from all over India, apart from Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The other notable stars who have lined up for film include Vikram, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, Prakash Raj, Jayaram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Lekshmi and many more.

Aishwarya’s last film had come out in 2018

The first poster shared by Aishwarya has already turned out to be a hit, with Twitter and other social media platforms discussing the yet to arrive flick from Mani Ratnam.  For Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ponniyin Selvan has added significance, owing to the fact that this would be her come back film. Aishwarya was not seen on screen for more than three years. She was last seen in 2018, when she starred in the musical titled Fanney Khan, which had Anil Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao as her co-stars.

Ponniyin Selvan will be her comeback vehicle, and she is expected to be seen in many other films after the Mani Ratnam venture. Her next is expected to be the Anurag Kashyap-directed Gulab Jamun, which will have her actor-husband Abhishek Bachchan starring opposite her.
