Yearender 2021: Movies that should not be missed

Thanks to the OTT platform, we could watch some amazing movies like Sherni, Shershaah sitting in our home

The year 2021 has proved to be a mixed bag for all movie lovers. It had movies like Sardar Udham Singh on one side and Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai on the other side. Thanks to the OTT platform, we could watch some great movies in the comfort of our homes.

Many A-listers have faltered at the box office while others who were trying to set their footing got a great response. Thus, here is the list of some movies that are worth a watch.

Shershaah

Shershaah, a biopic of war hero, Captain Vikram Batra has added that much required golden feather in Sidharth Malhotra’s cap for playing the lead. After a long time, a Bollywood tribute to someone had turned out to be so true to reality.

The nuanced portrayal of a beautiful love story of Captain and his girlfriend has scored the brownie points. Both Sidharth and Kiara Advani acting has skillfully captured Batra’s delicate moments at the battlefield.

Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar

An OTT release, this movie showed us the strong and emotional acting of Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Singh. The dark comedy worked due to its layered plot about its gender-defying identity in the end.

The story starts with Pinky saving Sandeep that then narrates the deep-rooted misogyny, class divide and privilege. A staple Dibakar Banerjee movie!

Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi

The family drama, featuring a mammoth cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Vinay Pathak, Konkona Sen Sharma, Vikrant Massey, Supriya Pathak and others. It was first shown at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival in 2019 and received rave reviews. Thanks to the OTT outburst, the movie came to the public domain.

After Ramprasad’s demise, his entire family comes under one roof for 13 days where they discuss the issues, motives, agendas and others. A perfect balance of both salty and sweet!

Pagglait

Pagglait is a satirical look at Indian society’s conventional ways of dealing with death and grief, especially the wife. Widowed after five months of marriage, Sandhya finds it difficult to grieve and doesn’t shed even a single drop of tear.

The dark comedy soon reveals the details of a loveless marriage and how she rediscovers herself. With Sanya Malhotra in the lead, Pagglait is a much-needed movie to talk about patriarchy and mansplaining.

Ajeeb Daastaans

Ajeeb Daastaans narrates four contrasting stories directed by Shashank Khaitan, Raj Mehta, Neeraj Ghaywan and Kayoze Irani that shed light on complex equations and relationships. It stars Fatima Sana Shaikh, Jaideep Ahlawat, Armaan Ralhan, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Abhishek Banerjee, Inayat Verma, Konkona Sen Sharma, Aditi Rao Hydari, Shefali Shah, Manav Kaul, and Tota Roy Chowdhury.

The stories represent different phases of our modernised community and slightly touch upon the uncomfortable emotions in fractured relationships. Each short is an achievement of storytelling and performances, but the standout one is Konkona Sen Sharma-Aditi Rao Hydari’s Geeli Pucchi. It is a flawless narration of acceptance of who you are churned with a deeply rooted class divide.
