Africa Day 2023 – Message from Ethiopia Mission in India

Ethiopia is proud to have played a key role in the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity - H.E. Ambassador Bizunesh Meseret (Deputy Head of the Mission)

On this Africa Day, it is important to highlight the accomplishments and challenges faced by the continent. Africa is home to diverse cultures, languages, and traditions that have enriched the world. However, it has also been a victim of colonialism, exploitation, and inequality.

Africa Day is celebrated annually on May 25th to commemorate the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, which later became the African Union (AU). It is a day to celebrate African unity, diversity, and progress, and to promote African development and integration.

As we celebrate Africa Day, let us take a moment to recognize the progress that has been made. Many African countries have made significant strides in areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Economic growth has also been on the rise, and African leaders have taken steps towards regional integration and cooperation.

Ethiopia recognizes the critical role of pan-Africanism in promoting unity, solidarity, and development on the continent. Ethiopia is proud to have played a key role in the establishment of the Organization of African Unity, now the African Union, which has been instrumental in advancing the African agenda.

On this occasion, it is important to acknowledge the significant contributions made by African countries towards achieving these goals, as well as the partnerships and collaborations that have helped to advance African development. India is one such partner that has been actively engaged in fostering bilateral cooperation with several African countries, including Ethiopia.

India and Ethiopia have had a strong bilateral relationship characterized by various areas of cooperation. India has provided development assistance, invested in various sectors of the Ethiopian economy, and engaged in technical cooperation in fields such as information technology, education, and renewable energy.

This partnership is an example of the potential that can be realized when countries work together towards common goals. It is hoped that such collaborations will continue to flourish, bringing about greater regional and global stability, prosperity, and development.

On this special Day, let us renew our commitment to building a better Africa for all. Let us work together to create “An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena”.

Happy Africa Day!
