Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu Resigns Amidst Party Turmoil

Political Crisis Deepens in Himachal Pradesh as Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu Steps Down: Congress Faces Internal Dissent Following Rajya Sabha Defeat.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has tendered his resignation amidst growing dissent among Congress legislators, according to reports emerging on Wednesday. This development follows the ruling Congress party’s embarrassing loss in the recent Rajya Sabha elections, despite holding a majority in the state.

The Leader of Opposition (LoP) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Jairam Thakur, has asserted that CM Sukhu has submitted his resignation. However, as of now, there has been no official confirmation or announcement from the office of the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister.

The decision to step down from his position comes after Congress faced a significant setback with the defeat of its candidate, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, in the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the state. This defeat has exacerbated existing disillusionment within the party over Sukhu’s leadership.

Adding to the turmoil within the Congress ranks, Vikramaditya Singh, the son of former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, has also resigned from the state cabinet led by CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Singh’s resignation underscores the escalating discontent within the party following the Rajya Sabha poll defeat.

Meanwhile, BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan emerged victorious in the Rajya Sabha elections, further amplifying the challenges faced by the Congress leadership in the state.

Vikramaditya Singh, in response to his resignation, stated his intention to hold consultations with his supporters and advisors to chart the future course of action. He highlighted the marginalization of MLAs within the state government over the past year, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive approach.

The Congress high command has dispatched senior leaders, Bhupender Singh Hooda and DK Shivakumar, to engage with disgruntled MLAs and address the prevailing crisis.

The unfolding political drama in Himachal Pradesh has exposed the deep-seated rift between factions supporting CM Sukhu and state unit head Pratibha Singh. This internal discord has been further exacerbated by the suspension of 15 BJP MLAs, including Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, by Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania, citing misconduct and disruption of House proceedings.

As the state grapples with this political upheaval, all eyes are on the Congress leadership and its ability to navigate through the challenges posed by internal dissent and external opposition.
