Himachal Pradesh Launches Ambitious Film Policy to Elevate State as Prime Filming Destination

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu Unveils Strategic Initiatives to Foster Local Talent, Showcase Heritage, and Attract Investments in the Film Industry.

Himachal Pradesh: The Himachal Pradesh government has recently approved an extensive film policy designed to invigorate cinematic exploration and position Himachal Pradesh as a premier film production locale. Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu emphasized the state’s rich cultural heritage, picturesque landscapes, and favourable filming conditions, expressing the government’s commitment to fostering employment opportunities for local youth and providing platforms for indigenous talent.

The newly introduced film policy aims to position Himachal Pradesh as the go-to destination for film production while leveraging films as a medium to showcase the state’s culture, history, heritage, traditions, and unexplored scenic treasures. The policy seeks to attract increased capital investments in the state by encouraging growth in the film industry.

To facilitate a seamless process for filmmakers, a Film Facilitation Cell will be established within the Department of Information and Public Relations. This cell will serve as a centralized hub for obtaining permissions, ensuring an efficient online process within three working days. It will also link with the web portal of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, streamlining the entire procedure.

Enhancements in shooting locations and amenities will be provided to film producers, fostering a more developed environment for the industry. The state government also plans to encourage private companies to establish production houses, maintaining an online inventory of available equipment.

Chief Minister Sukhu outlined additional incentives, including the institution of Annual Film Awards for films with at least 50% of their shooting done within the state. Under the ‘Kalakar Protsahan Yojna,’ talented children and youth from Himachal Pradesh pursuing professional courses in performing arts at reputed national institutions will receive encouragement and support.

A Film Development Fund will be established to organize festivals, awards, and related activities. This fund, managed by the Department of Information and Public Relations under the guidance of the H.P. Film Development Council, will play a crucial role in strategizing the state’s film sector’s development and recommending infrastructure upgrades to the government.

The Chief Minister stressed the holistic approach of the new film policy, emphasizing streamlined facilitation for filmmakers, the nurturing of local talent, and the promotion of the state’s cultural richness. This comprehensive initiative signifies a significant leap towards transforming Himachal Pradesh into a vibrant hub for the film industry, concluded CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
