Hossein Amir-Abdollahian advocates for stability in the Middle East during meeting with UN envoy.

Iran, 20 April 2024: In a meeting with the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian delivered a stern rebuke of the Israeli government, accusing Netanyahu of acting “out of control” and committing crimes that require immediate restraint.

The top Iranian diplomat’s remarks, made during a gathering in New York on Friday night, highlighted Iran’s concerns over recent escalations in the region, particularly in response to what he termed as Israel’s aggressive actions. Referring to Iran’s retaliatory attack on Israel, Amir-Abdollahian emphasized the legitimacy of the response, citing international law as its basis.

While acknowledging Iran’s capability for a broader operation, the Foreign Minister clarified that the retaliation specifically targeted military positions responsible for the attack on Iran’s consulate in Damascus on April 1. This targeted approach reflects Iran’s strategic stance in responding to provocations while avoiding broader conflicts.

Amir-Abdollahian did not mince words in his condemnation of Israeli actions, particularly in the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He accused the Israeli regime, with backing from the United States and its allies, of perpetrating atrocities against innocent Palestinian civilians, including women and children. He stressed that the cessation of Israeli aggression in Palestine is essential for stabilizing and securing the region.

In response, UN envoy Tor Wennesland expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, particularly the plight of the Palestinian people. Calling for an immediate end to the hostilities in Gaza, Wennesland underscored the United Nations’ commitment to de-escalating tensions and facilitating peace efforts in the region. He pledged to utilize all available resources to achieve these objectives, emphasizing the urgent need for dialogue and cooperation among all parties involved.

As tensions continue to simmer in the Middle East, the calls for restraint and diplomacy from both Iranian and UN officials serve as reminders of the pressing need for constructive dialogue and peaceful resolution to the longstanding conflicts in the region.
