Manipur Government Denies Permission for Congress’ Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, Citing Law and Order Concerns

CM Biren Singh's decision sparks criticism as Congress vows to proceed with rally at an alternate venue.

In a significant development, the Manipur Government has refused permission for the proposed 66-day ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra‘ led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Chief Minister N Biren Singh attributed the denial to the fragile law and order situation in the state.

The Yatra, scheduled to commence from Imphal on January 14 and conclude in Mumbai on March 20, faced a setback as the state Congress party’s formal application for permission went unanswered. A delegation from Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), led by its president K Meghachandra Singh, met Chief Minister Biren Singh seeking clarity on the matter.

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president Keisham Meghachandra Singh expressed disappointment with the Chief Minister’s decision, calling it a “murder of democracy” and a violation of both people’s and political rights. Undeterred by the denial, he announced the Congress party’s intention to organize the rally at a private venue in Khongjom, Thoubal district, emphasizing the Yatra as a program for the people.

The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, covering 6,713 kilometers across 14 states and 85 districts, is set to be flagged off by ICC president Mallikarjun Kharghe and culminate in Mumbai on March 20. The rally, featuring both foot marches and bus rides, aims to address the wounds of the people affected by ethnic violence.

Earlier in the week, Chief Minister Biren Singh had stated that the decision to grant permission for using the ground in Imphal East district was under active consideration. The final decision would be made after receiving reports from various security agencies.

AICC general secretary K C Venugopal and other national leaders visited Imphal to assess the preparation work at Hapta Kangjeibung. Despite the setback, the Congress delegation urged CM Biren Singh to prioritize peace over party politics, highlighting the rally’s significance in restoring peace to Manipur.
