NEW DELHI — N. Biren Singh, the chief minister of Manipur, on Wednesday announced to facilitate free of cost treatment for Hepatitis B in the state’s Model Treatment Centers (MTCs).

On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, the Manipur CM made the announcement and asked for coming together to raise awareness about the disease’s prevention and saving lives.

“As we observe the World Hepatitis Day today, let us unite to work towards spreading awareness on prevention of the deadly disease & save precious lives,” the chief minister wrote on Twitter.

He announced that from today, Hepatitis B treatment in Manipur will be made available free of cost at Model Treatment Centers in JNIMS & RIMS.

The World Hepatitis Day is celebrated every year on July 28 in order to spread awareness about viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that can cause severe liver disease and hepatocellular cancer.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified hepatitis as a major health concern for India. As per WHO, about 4 crore people were chronically infected with hepatitis B, and 60 lakh to 1.2 crore people with hepatitis C in India last year.

Nearly 2,50,000 people die of viral hepatitis or its sequelae every year in the country, as per the Indian Journal of Medical Research.

Marked on the birthday of Nobel Prize-winning scientist Dr Baruch Blumberg to honour him, the theme for this year’s World Hepatitis Day is ‘Hepatitis Can’t Wait’.
