Telangana comes to the aid of medical students evacuated from Ukraine

Telangana CM’s statement that the state will fund the medical students to complete their courses has come as a major relief

In what could be seen as a great relief for students from Telangana who had been pursuing their courses in in war-torn Ukraine, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao (KCR) has announced that all these students will now have their studies funded by the state government. This announcement by the Telangana Chief Minister comes amidst the hue and cry over why children from India travel all the way to Ukraine to study medicine.

The CM’s statement in the Telangana Assembly is sure to be applauded by the students as well as parents, who had been left in the lurch when they had to be evacuated out of Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the military action against the country. Going by statistics, as many as 740 students from Telangana state had been enrolled in various universities in Ukraine.

Medical students heave a sigh of relief

Extending the much needed support to the children who have already returned from war-ravaged Ukraine, KCR has said that he would inform the Union Government that the state will support them.

It needs to be noted that the evacuation of students who were enrolled in universities across Ukraine had triggered a debate on why so many students travel to that country to pursue studies in medicine. Arguments have centred around India failing to offer the needed number of medical seats in colleges even to deserving candidates to students failing to clear entrance exams.

While all these arguments had been filling the public space, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi came up with a comment saying that students go abroad after failing to qualify in competitive exams in India.

Medical education in India, a costly affair

Joshi’s comment was trashed as silly by many including the grieving father of Naveen Shekharappa, who had lost his life in Ukraine. He retorted that students are forced to go abroad as pursuing medical education in India was a costly affair.

The sentiment has been echoed by many, though the Centre has not responded to them. Now with Telangana state coming up with the new announcement, many students from the state who had been left worrying as to what to do next will have some relief.
