International Tea Day was celebrated on the 15th of December each year till 2019. Later it gained its official status when the UN adopted this day

Tea is one of the most loved beverages around the world. Millions of people start their day with a cup of tea in the morning. India is one of the biggest producers of tea and recognizes its importance to communities. The tea industry is serving and keeping people active all over the globe. To pay homage to tea, International Tea Day was introduced.

History and Background

In 2005, the International Tea Day was launched by the trade unions, small tea growers, and civil society organizations of Asia and Africa. The motive of starting this day was to address issues related to the wages of workers and the prices of small tea producers. The Tea Board of India later proposed this day to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization in the hopes of making it an official holiday.

The UN adopted this day and made it an official holiday since 21st December 2019. The official day to celebrate International Tea Day is May 21st. Prior to the official adoption of this day, it was celebrated on 15th December each year.

Significance

A good cup of tea is appreciated by everyone and what makes it good is the tea powder or leaves that are used to make it. The tea industry works towards bringing good quality tea to our homes. However, the working conditions of the workers in the tea industry need ample improvement. This day is an opportunity to pay homage to tea as well as the workers of the tea industry. It is important that people are made aware of the working conditions in the tea industry. This will alert the people and some improvement can be seen in the industry.
