Maana Patel becomes first Indian female swimmer to qualify for Tokyo 2020

NEW DELHI Maana Patel became the only woman and third Indian swimmer to qualify for Tokyo 2020. Various politicians including ministers in Central government and state chief ministers congratulated the swimmer for the feat.

“Backstroke swimmer Maana Patel has become the 1st female and 3rd Indian swimmer to qualify for Tokyo 2020. I congratulate Maana, who qualified through Universality Quota. Well done!!,” tweeted Sports Minister, Kiren Rijiju.

While Tirath Singh Rawat, the chief minister of Uttarakhand, tweeted, “Many congratulations and best wishes to the Indian female swimmer #MaanaPatel, who created history by qualifying for #Tokyo2020 as India’s first female swimmer,” adding that all the countrymen are proud of her.

It is pertinent to mention that Maana Patel was nominated under universality slots.

For the first time in the country’s history, India will have three swimmers competing in their individual disciplines at the Summer Games.

Last month, Sajan Prakash became the first Indian swimmer to make the Olympic ‘A’ cut.
