Sonam Wangchuk Concludes 21-Day Climate Fast with a Gathering of 7000 Supporters

21st Day OF MY #CLIMATEFAST. 350 people slept in -10°C. 5000 people in the day here. But still not a word from the government. Directing his appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, Wangchuk called for a transformation from mere politicians to visionary statesmen.

Ladakh: On the final day of his grueling 21-day Climate Fast, renowned education reformist and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk bid farewell to the first leg of his protest. With his steadfast determination and unwavering commitment to raise awareness about climate change, Wangchuk’s demonstration gathered an impressive crowd of 7000 supporters.

The symbolic duration of 21 days echoes the historic fasting undertaken by Mahatma Gandhi, who fasted for the same duration during India’s struggle for independence. Wangchuk’s fast, however, is a modern-day plea for urgent action against the looming climate crisis.

Reflecting on the conclusion of his fast, Wangchuk expressed his gratitude to the multitude of individuals who stood in solidarity with him throughout the journey. Despite enduring freezing temperatures of -10°C, 350 supporters spent the night alongside him, while a staggering 7000 joined during the daytime.

Yet, amidst the overwhelming support, Wangchuk lamented the deafening silence from the government. In a poignant message delivered on social media, he emphasized the pressing need for leaders of integrity, foresight, and wisdom. Directing his appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, Wangchuk called for a transformation from mere politicians to visionary statesmen.

“21st Day OF MY CLIMATE FAST. 350 people slept in -10°C. 5000 people in the day here. But still not a word from the government. We need statesmen of integrity, farsightedness & wisdom in this country & not just shortsighted characterless politicians,” Wangchuk tweeted.

Undeterred by the lack of response, Wangchuk outlined a plan for the continuation of the protest. Women’s groups from Ladakh will take the baton forward with a 10-day fast, followed by youth activists and monks from local monasteries. Wangchuk himself vows to return to the forefront of the protest, ensuring that the message resonates far and wide.

“The journey has only started. But we still hope n trust we won’t have to do all this. Sooner rather than later a sense of responsible leadership will arise,” Wangchuk affirmed.

As the first leg of Wangchuk’s Climate Fast draws to a close, it marks not an end, but a new beginning in the fight against climate change. With each passing day, the voices demanding action grow louder, echoing the urgency of the crisis that threatens the very fabric of our planet.
