Renowned Environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk Leads Climate Fast into 18th Day with Growing Support.

Ladakh: Sonam Wangchuk, the renowned environmentalist and educator, continues his climate fast on the 17th and 18th days, drawing attention to the urgent need for action on climate change. His steadfast commitment has inspired over a thousand individuals to join him in his protest against the escalating environmental crisis.

On the 17th day of his fast, Wangchuk shared updates on his social media platforms, stating, “I’m fine, just a bit tired. More than a 1000 joined me for the fast. Snowfall in the afternoon. Leaders from Kargil visited & announced fast from Sunday the 24th to 27th March in Kargil city. Hope you too are joining such gatherings & fasts in your city this Sunday.” This call for collective action underscores Wangchuk’s belief in the power of community mobilization in addressing climate issues.

Coinciding with World Water Day, Wangchuk emphasized the critical role of water conservation amidst the backdrop of rapidly melting Himalayan glaciers. “Beginning the 17th day of my #climatefast. Himalayan glaciers are melting away fast. And our automated artificial glaciers in Ladakh cannot solve this problem. But YOU CAN…” he tweeted, highlighting the urgency of individual and collective action in combating climate change.

As Wangchuk entered his 18th day of fasting, the number of participants swelled to 2000 individuals, demonstrating growing public concern over environmental degradation. Despite facing frigid temperatures of -8°C, Wangchuk remained resolute in his mission, urging citizens to raise their voices against government inaction and the undue influence of industrial lobbies. “As the government comes under pressure from industrial lobbies we citizens need to neutralize this pressure by raising our voices… They only care about growth & development. But what does this growth mean for our other siblings in nature…” he emphasized.

Wangchuk’s climate fast serves as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of environmental issues and the imperative for immediate and concerted action. His unwavering dedication continues to inspire individuals worldwide to join the fight against climate change, one fast at a time.
