20th Day of Climate Fast: Sonam Wangchuk Continues Vigil as Government Remains Silent

In a democracy, it's unusual for the government to remain silent when 90% of the population is urging leaders to uphold their promises," Wangchuk remarked.

Ladakh: Sonam Wangchuk has marked the 20th day of his Climate Fast, joined by 3000 individuals in a powerful demonstration of environmental concern. Despite the significant public outcry, the government’s response has been notably absent, prompting Wangchuk to express disappointment in the democratic process.

“In a democracy, it’s unusual for the government to remain silent when 90% of the population is urging leaders to uphold their promises,” Wangchuk remarked. “Hundreds have joined me in fasting for 20 days, yet there has been no acknowledgment from the authorities.”

The #ClimateFast, which Wangchuk initiated, has garnered widespread support across the nation, with citizens rallying behind the cause in the absence of substantial media coverage. Wangchuk expressed gratitude for the public’s solidarity, emphasizing that their collective efforts compensate for the lack of mainstream media attention.

As the 20th day drew to a close, Wangchuk reflected on the ongoing struggle, acknowledging feelings of exhaustion and despondency. Despite his own weariness, he found solace in the continued participation of thousands, with 2500 individuals observing a day-long fast and 300 opting to spend the night outdoors in solidarity.

In a poignant plea directed at Indian leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Wangchuk reminded them of the values they are entrusted to uphold. “It is incumbent upon our leaders to honor their commitments to the environment and the well-being of our nation,” Wangchuk stated. “We urge them to heed the voice of the people and take decisive action to address the climate crisis.”

The 20th day of Wangchuk’s #ClimateFast serves as a stark reminder of the growing urgency to combat climate change and hold governments accountable for their environmental responsibilities. As the vigil continues, the eyes of the nation remain fixed on the government’s response, awaiting meaningful action in the face of an escalating global crisis.
