Sonam Wangchuk and Retired Subedar Stanba Mark Day 15 of ClimateFast with a Message of Concern and Hope

ClimateFast Participants Wangchuk and Stanba Emphasize Global Concerns and Local Activism on Day 15.

Ladakh: On the 15th day of the #ClimateFast movement, renowned engineer and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share insights and reflections on his continued fasting journey. Enduring extreme conditions alongside 125 others, Wangchuk highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change, particularly in regions like Ladakh where the impact is palpable.

Wangchuk’s message began with a stark description of the conditions they faced: “BEGINNING OF DAY 15 OF #CLIMATEFAST. I’m still fine surviving on just water & salts. Along with me 125 people slept hungry outdoors under clear skies. Temperature: -11°C.” Despite the harsh environment, his focus remained on the broader significance of preserving Ladakh’s glaciers, emphasizing that the issue extends far beyond the local community.

He urged for a collective understanding that the preservation of Ladakh’s glaciers is not merely a concern for its residents but a matter of global significance. By drawing attention to the interconnectedness of environmental issues, Wangchuk aimed to foster a sense of shared responsibility in combating climate change.

As the day concluded, Wangchuk shifted the spotlight to another participant in the ClimateFast movement, retired Subedaar Stanba, a former Indian Army soldier with 30 years of service, including deployment in the Kargil war. Stanba’s sacrifice and dedication to serving his country contrasted sharply with his current activism, as he expressed disappointment in the treatment of Ladakh by the current government.

“END OF DAY 15 OF #CLIMATEFAST. Today I’ll introduce you to another brave heart who also completes 15 days of total fast today. Retired Subedaar Stanba served Indian Army for 30 years, including in Kargil war,” Wangchuk wrote. “But today thousands of such former soldiers are heartbroken at the treatment meted out to Ladakh by the current government… Let’s still hope there’s light at the end of the tunnel.”

Stanba’s story underscored the multifaceted nature of the ClimateFast movement, encompassing individuals from diverse backgrounds united by a common cause. Despite facing adversity, both Wangchuk and Stanba remained steadfast in their commitment to raising awareness and advocating for change.

As the ClimateFast movement continues to gain momentum, their voices serve as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for action on climate change. With each passing day, Wangchuk, Stanba, and countless others reaffirm their resolve to protect the planet for future generations, holding onto hope that their efforts will pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future.
