Delhi’s Security Landscape Undergoes Major Overhaul: IPS Officers Transferred in Response to Emerging Threats

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Orders Strategic Reshuffle to Strengthen Anti-Terror Measures After Parliament Breach and Israel Embassy Attacks.

Amidst growing concerns over recent security threats, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has initiated a significant shake-up within the city’s law enforcement apparatus. Acting on the recommendations of the Police Establishment Board, several IPS officers have been transferred in response to emerging challenges, such as the recent breach of security at the parliament and the consecutive attack outside the Israeli embassy.

In a notable change of leadership, Rajendra Pal Upadhaya (IPS 1991 batch) is set to lead the Delhi Police special cell, signalling a strategic move to bolster anti-terrorism efforts. Meanwhile, Dependra Pathak, formerly in the role of Special CP for law and order, will now head the security wing. The reshuffling extends to other key positions, with Ravinder Yadav (IPS 1995 batch) and Madhup Tiwari appointed as heads of Zone 1 and Zone 2 for law and order, respectively.

The Delhi Police Crime Branch, serving as the pivotal agency for interstate coordination, will now be under the leadership of Shalini Singh (IPS 1996 batch).

Specifically addressing security concerns in the New Delhi area, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) has been transferred to the special branch. Additionally, Sagar Preet Hooda, formerly holding the position of Special CP for Law and Order, will now oversee PCR and communications.

The restructuring comes in the aftermath of incidents like the parliament security breach during the Winter session, where individuals infiltrated the Lok Sabha chamber, released gas canisters, and voiced anti-establishment slogans. Notably, on the last day of 2023, Delhi Police responded to a call reporting a ‘blast’ near the Israeli Embassy in the Chanakyapuri diplomatic enclave, although no evidence of such an incident was found at the scene. These developments underline the city’s commitment to adapting its security apparatus to address evolving threats effectively.
