‘Black Widow’ to release in Disney+Hotstar in India On September 3

Marvel’s Black Widow skips theatrical release even after Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney claiming breach of contract

Marvel’s Black Widow will release on the OTT platform Disney+Hotstar in India on September 3 in six regional languages. Despite Scarlett Johansson filing a lawsuit against Disney, the movie skips theatrical release in India.

The streaming platform tweeted, “Black Widow is done running from her past, and from you. Marvel’s movie of the year releases on 3rd September! In English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.”

Incidentally, Marvel’s Legend of the Ten Rings and Shang-Chi will release in India on the same date, exclusively in theatres. The movies will be released in four regional languages: English, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada

‘Black Widow’ Plot

Since Natasha Romanoff sacrifices her life in Avenger Endgame, the movie is set in the past. Black Widow will follow events sequences after 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, where Natasha finds herself on the run from the law. 

The film is directed by Cate Shortland and tells about the only female superhero in the old guard of the Avengers. Black Widow script is written by Eric Pearson and stars Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O-T Fagbenle, William Hurt, Ray Winstone, Rachel Weisz, and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff.

In the film, Natasha has to deal with and confront her past that deals with Red Room. Red Room is a top-secret Russian program, which brainwashes young girls to become deadly assassins. The final trailer shows Black Widow saving young and innocent girls by dismantling the Red Room.

‘Black Widow’ sets new box office record in the covid-19 era

Scarlett Johansson’s starter “Black Widow” had set a new record in the box office soon after release. The Indian Express reported, the film collected $80 million over a three-day weekend in the domestic markets of North America. Globally, the movie earned a whopping $158 million till mid of July. On the release day itself, Black Widow earned $40 million.

Disney’s media and entertainment distribution chairman Kareem Daniel said in a statement that Black Widow’s strong performance this weekend affirms our flexible distribution strategy of making franchise films available in theatres for a true cinematic experience and, as COVID concerns continue globally, providing choice to consumers who prefer to watch at home on Disney Plus, according to India.com

Black Widow Controversy

Scarlett Johansson had filed a lawsuit against Marvel’s parent company Disney on 21 July. The actress claimed that Disney breached her contract that guaranteed exclusive theatrical release. Scarlett, who is also the executive producer of the movie stated in the lawsuit that Disney deprived her of potential earning, which is linked with the box office performance of the movie. 

Disney had released the movie on theatre and its OTT platform for $30 as rental charges simultaneously. It has deprived the actress of her potential earnings. Scarlett has acted in nine Marvel movies since 2010’s Iron Man 2.

Apart from this, the actress also broke Twitter announcing the birth of her baby boy with her husband Colin Jost. They have named the baby Cosmo.
