Green Roots: Massive Tree Plantation Drive at Maa Karni Teacher Training College with Rotary Club Aadya

Bikaner — Maa Karni Teacher Training College recently turned its campus into a budding green space through a large-scale tree plantation drive organized in collaboration with Rotary Club Aadya. More than 250 saplings were planted in a single day, marking a serious push toward environmental awareness and long-term ecological action.

This wasn’t just about planting trees—it was about growing a culture of care and responsibility.

Members of Rotary Club Aadya were at the forefront of the effort. Secretary Sangeeta Shekhawat, along with Bharti Gehlot, Sheela Sankhla, and Nishita Surana, attended the drive and pitched in alongside students and faculty.

“We’re not just here to plant trees. We’re here to raise them,” said Shekhawat. “Each one of these saplings is a future contributor to the planet’s health.”

Rtn. Nishita Surana added, “Planting a tree is more than a gesture—it’s a promise to the next generation. We owe them clean air and a livable world.”

Education and Environment: Two Sides of the Same Coin

College Director Manak Vyas addressed the gathering with a blunt message: “Climate change isn’t a distant crisis—it’s here, now. Schools and colleges must be part of the solution.”

Faculty members echoed the urgency. Dr. Ritu Shrimal pointed out that when teacher trainees connect with nature, they carry that care into their future classrooms. “They become educators who lead by example,” she said.

Prof. Rekha Verma added, “True education doesn’t stop at books. It’s about instilling values. A simple act like planting a tree teaches patience, responsibility, and social purpose.”

The effort was a collective one. Faculty, staff, and students rolled up their sleeves to get the job done. Names like Pankaj Acharya, Rakesh Vyas, Rakesh Purohit, Dr. Poonam Middha, Sarita Acharya, Shivji Chhangani, and Sudhir ji were instrumental in organizing and executing the initiative.

Trainees were taught the importance of each sapling they planted—especially those with medicinal value or ecological benefits. And this wasn’t just a one-day affair. Each student has been assigned a tree to nurture through the coming year. The college plans to set up “green care” committees to monitor progress and support ongoing maintenance.

From One Day to Everyday: Sustaining the Movement

“We’re not treating this as an event. This is the beginning of an ongoing commitment,” said one staff member. “We want this campus to grow greener every year—and for our students to take that mindset wherever they go.”

This initiative stands as proof that when civil society groups and educational institutions collaborate with purpose, they can create real change—from the ground up. While the world debates climate policy, places like Maa Karni College are already taking action.

A greener campus is now in the making. But more importantly, a generation of future teachers just got a lesson in what it means to take responsibility—for the planet, and for each other.
