Feds Launch $100M Cybersecurity Grant Push to Fortify Local Governments

On August 1st, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) jointly announced a new wave of cybersecurity funding—over $100 million—aimed at helping U.S. communities bolster their digital defenses.
The funding is being delivered through two distinct programs: the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program (SLCGP) and the Tribal Cybersecurity Grant Program (TCGP). The SLCGP allocates $91.7 million for state and local governments, while the TCGP offers $12.1 million specifically for tribal entities. Both programs are designed to help governments plan and execute stronger cybersecurity strategies, hire qualified personnel, and safeguard public services from cyber attacks.
“This grant funding ensures communities and our partners across the nation have the crucial resources needed to strengthen their cyber defense capabilities and mitigate risk,” said CISA Acting Director Madhu Gottumukkala. “We’re empowering state, local, and tribal governments to build more resilient cyber ecosystems.”
The funds are intended to help communities improve real-world cyber readiness—through threat detection, response exercises, risk assessments, and infrastructure upgrades. Unlike one-size-fits-all solutions, the grants allow for tailored strategies to address unique local and regional cyber challenges.
CISA emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader push to protect essential services such as water, emergency communications, public safety, and health care—many of which are increasingly targeted by cyber criminals.
Interested agencies and tribal governments can access application guidelines and details through CISA’s official portal: cisa.gov/cybergrants.
This funding drive not only marks a proactive step in federal cybersecurity support but also signals a growing recognition: protecting digital infrastructure is now as critical as protecting physical infrastructure.
