Indian Olympic medal winner boxer Lovlina Borgohain greeted warmly at Guwahati airport

Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, was awaiting her at the airport

NEW DELHI — The state government in Assam gave boxer Lovlina Borgohain a warm welcome at Guwahati airport on Thursday after she earned a bronze medal at the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics.

Lovlina Borgohain welcomed by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, was there at the airport to greet her. He took to Twitter to say that the boxer’s Olympic victory had sparked a billion aspirations.

Biswa said he greeted the Olympian medallist Lovlina Borgohain with pride and honor. With her Olympic triumph, she has sparked a billion dreams and set an example for aspiring sportsmen in rural parts to strive for major achievements on the international stage, as per Sarma’s tweet.

Won bronze medal in welterweight

Borgohain won bronze in the women’s welterweight (64-69kg) semi-final after losing to Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli at the Olympics.

Busenaz Surmeneli beat Borgohain in a 5-0 unanimous decision. As she asserted her control, all five judges ruled in favor of the Turkish fighter.

Lovlina had indicated earlier on Monday, after landing in India from Tokyo, that her next goal is to win gold in Paris 2024.

Third Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal

It would not be out of place to mention that with Lovlina Borgohain’s bronze medal in the Women’s welterweight event, she became only the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Earlier, she competed in the 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and the 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships, where she earned a bronze medal.

She took gold in the first India Open International Boxing Tournament in New Delhi and silver in the second India Open International Boxing Tournament in Guwahati.

Borgohain is Assam’s first female athlete and the state’s second boxer to compete in the Olympics. She was the sixth person from Assam to receive the Arjuna Award in 2020.
