Tributes galore for Mangal Pandey on his birth anniversary
Mangal Pandey was a soldier who played a key part in the events immediately preceding the outbreak of the Indian rebellion of 1857
Today is the 194th birth anniversary of Mangal Pandey, who started the freedom struggle of 1857, which is called the first war of the country’s independence from British rule.
Many leaders including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have paid humble tributes to him.
CM Yogi Adityanath tweeted on the birth anniversary of Mangal Pandey, calling him the immortal son of India who awakened the nation with his sacrifice in 1857 against the ‘barbaric’ British rule.
“On his birth anniversary, we salute Mangal Pandey, an Indian sepoy in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry regiment, who played an important role in the events immediately leading to the outbreak of the First War of Indian Independence in 1857. We honor his ultimate sacrifice,” the Congress party said.
BJP’s Kishan Reddy said, “I bow in reverence to our revolutionary freedom fighter Mangal Pandey, on his birth anniversary.”
“With his unrelenting grit & conviction to free India, he contributed to the uprising which leads to the revolt of 1857,” he added.
“Tributes to the great hero of the first freedom struggle of 1857, Amar Shaheed Mangal Pandey ji, on his birth anniversary,” Arvind Kejriwal said while paying tributes to Mangal Pandey.
The ABVP tweeted, “On his birth anniversary, tributes to Mangal Pandey – the hero of India’s first war of independence. He played an important role in the revolt of 1857 against British rule which eventually inspired millions of Indians to fight for freedom against the colonial rule.”
It is in place to mention here that Mangal Pandey was a soldier who played a key part in the events immediately preceding the outbreak of the Indian rebellion of 1857. He was a sepoy (infantryman) in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry (BNI) regiment of the British East India Company.
In 1984, the Indian government issued a postage stamp to remember him. His life and actions have also been portrayed in several cinematic productions.
