Congress appoints Navjot Singh Sidhu as President of Punjab PCC

Sonia Gandhi has appointed Shri Navjot Singh Sidhu as the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect

In the midst of a spat with chief minister Amarinder Singh, Congress politician Navjot Singh Sidhu has been named the party’s Punjab unit’s head.

Sidhu’s appointment comes after days of infighting within the Punjab Congress, with the Congress’ central leadership conducting multiple meetings with the warring factions in an attempt to resolve the situation.

“Hon’ble Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi has appointed Shri Navjot Singh Sidhu as the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect. The party appreciates the contributions of outgoing PCC President, Shri Sunil Jakhar,” the Congress party said.

Sangat Singh Gilzian, Sukhwinder Singh Danny, Pawan Goel, and Kuljit Singh Nagra were also named as working presidents of the Punjab Congress unit by Congress interim president, Sonia Gandhi.

Pertinently, tensions in the Congress’ Punjab wing had risen in recent weeks, with Sidhu chastising Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

Sidhu had said that his colleagues had been intimidated for expressing concerns about the state government’s handling of the “sacrilege” issue for speaking the truth.

However, Singh met with Punjab state in-charge Harish Rawat on Saturday and said the discussion was productive but had vowed to take up the issues again with Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Amarinder Singh, on the other hand, had told Harish Rawat, according to media reports, that he won’t meet Navjot Sidhu until he apologizes for his “derogatory” comments.
