The sorry state of affairs of the National Rural Livelihood Mission

No records of how many families have been able to improve their living condition under the National Rural Livelihood Mission.

In the year 2011, the Central Government started the National Rural Livelihood Mission or the NRLM. The stated aim of the mission was to make the poor in rural India economically self-sufficient and bring them above the poverty line. The mission was started in Jabalpur in 2017.

On paper, more than 848 Self Help Groups have been created. Every Self Help group had 10 to 15 women and they were given tasks such as making uniforms and supplying food for the mid-day meal schemes. However, like other government schemes, this mission also has been hit by a lack of budget and hitches.

According to the leading Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar, most women self-help groups it contacted lamented the absence of a budget and also payments being made very late. Lack of monetary help is forcing the members of the self-help groups to look for other means of livelihood.

Tasks Assigned To The Self-Help Groups

The government is boasting that the job of creating self-help groups has been achieved. The work of the self-help group has also been appreciated. However, most of the self-help groups are lamenting the paucity of funds.

Among the tasks given to the Self Help Groups include:

  • Making School Uniforms for students of Government School
  • Manufacture and distribution of Phenyl and Bleaching powder
  • Running of Kruttika outlets in the Collectorate premises
  • Running farms for Cows, buffaloes and Poultry
  • Running of Xerox and Ayurvedic Medicine shops
  • Manufacture and distribution of Spices and condiments
  • Horticulture
  • Distribution of Textbooks and copies in Government Schools

The main aim of the National Rural Livelihood Mission was to improve the living standard of people in rural India and bring them above the poverty line. However, according to Dainik Bhaskar, there are no records of how much this mission has accomplished and how many poor families have been brought out of the poverty line.
