BV Nagarathna poised to be first Indian woman Chief Justice in 2027

Justice BV Nagarathna is presently a judge in the Karnataka high court. She is one of the three other women judges who President Kovind has approved. 

The nation could see its first woman Chief Justice by the end of this decade, reports the Indian Express. BV Nagarathna is the Judge who could become the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027.

Justice BV Nagarathna comes from a family of legal luminaries, and her father, ES Venkataramiah, was CJI for around six months in 1989. Born on October 30, 1962, Justice BV Nagarathna entered the Judicial service as an additional judge in 2008. She was promoted to the position of a permanent judge of the Karnataka HC in 2010.

It was a landmark occasion when President Ramnath Kovind gave his asset for the appointment of Justice BV Nagarathna and eight others to the Supreme Court. After the Judges take the oath, the Supreme Court will have the strength of 33 Judges, and there will be only one vacancy to be filled.

BV Nagarathna: First woman Chief Justice of India (CJI) in 2027

In a landmark moment, President Ram Nath Kovind approved the appointment of paving the way for her to be the first woman Chief Justice of India (CJI) in 2027. After the new judges take the oath, the Supreme Court will have a working strength of 33, with just one vacancy.

Justice Nagarathna is presently a judge in the Karnataka high court. She is one of the three other women judges who President Kovind has approved. 

The other women judges are Hima Kohli, Chief Justice Telangana High Court, and Justice Bela Trivedi of the Gujarat high court. At present, there is only one woman, Judge Justice Indira Banerjee, in the Supreme Court. However, she is set to retire in 2022. In the history of the Apex court, there have been only eight woman judges to date.

Vocal about the need for the regulation of the electronic media

Justice Nagarathna started her career as a lawyer in Bengaluru. She is considered an expert in constitutional law and has given much landmark judgment in her career as a Judge. She is very vocal about the need for the regulation of electronic media. She was dead opposed to sensationalism in the form of ‘Breaking News, ‘Flash News’ or any other form and urged the government to set up an autonomous and statutory mechanism to regulate broadcast media.
