Proud moment for regional cinema as Jai Bhim gets featured on Oscars YouTube channel

Jai Bhim, the legal drama helmed by T J Gnanavel, had been making waves not just in the local and national circuits, but the international arena too ever since it started streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

The film has been in the news ever since people began watching it as it was streamed in various geographies. Soon the Suriya-starrer found its place above classics such as ‘The Godfather’ and ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ on IMDb holding high a rating of 9.6.

The film, which was based on a true life incident that shook the people’s conscience in Tamil Nadu, came about as a game changer in all respects, and brought with it the hope of better films to come.

The film has now bagged yet another honour. Jai Bhim has become India’s first Tamil film to feature on the Oscars official YouTube channel. With the Academy Awards’ YouTube channel showcasing a scene from the flick, it has come as a big boost to regional cinema in India. The YouTube video also shows filmmaker T J Gnanavel sharing his vision behind the project.

Jai Bhim team excited as it gets featured in Oscars channel

Soon after the video went live, Jai Bhim’s producers shared their excitement on Twitter saying: “An honour of the highest order! #JaiBhim has been featured in the official YouTube channel of @TheAcademy #SceneAtTheAcademy”

The Oscars YouTube video has also got fans of the southern superstar thrilled. Suriya’s character in film has been praised as a landmark event and the Oscars mention is being seen as a historic and ‘proud moment’.

Jai Bhim had earlier received a Golden Globes Awards 2022 nomination under ‘Best Non-English Language Film’ category.

Based on a true incident

Produced by the actor-couple Jothika and Suriya under the banner of 2D Entertainment, the film is based on a true incident that happened in in 1993. It narrates the tale of a case fought by Justice K. Chandru, which involved the lives of Sengeni and Rajakannu, a couple from the Irular tribe.

The plot travels through the arrest and custodial death of Rajakkannu after he was trapped in a false case. Sengeni seeking the help of lawyer Chandru to get justice for her husband and how the events unfold later on form the crux of the film. Jai Bhim has Suriya, Lijomol Jose, K Manikandan, Prakash Raj and Rejisha Vijayan in prominent roles.
