Global Leaders Call for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza Amid Mounting Humanitarian Concerns

Canada, Australia, and New Zealand join Turkey and Egypt in urging Israel to halt planned military operation in Rafah, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and deliver essential humanitarian aid.

The leaders of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have issued a joint statement calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza amid reports of Israel’s planned military operation in Rafah. Expressing grave concern over the potential ground offensive into Rafah, the statement emphasizes the catastrophic consequences such an operation would have, particularly for the approximately 1.5 million Palestinians seeking refuge in the area. The leaders underscore the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and urge Israel to reconsider its course of action, highlighting the paramount importance of protecting civilians and upholding international humanitarian law.

Furthermore, the statement references the International Court of Justice’s ruling in a genocide case brought by South Africa, which obligates Israel to ensure the delivery of basic services and essential humanitarian assistance to civilians. It calls for Hamas to disarm and release all remaining hostages, stressing the need for a ceasefire that is not one-sided.

The Prime Ministers of Australia, Canada, and New Zealand assert that the protection of civilians is crucial and condemn Hamas for its terror attacks on Israel. They advocate for rapid, safe, and unimpeded humanitarian relief for civilians, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Additionally, they reaffirm their commitment to a two-state solution, aiming for peace, security, and dignity for both Palestinians and Israelis.

On the other hand, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi have also called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, along with the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to its residents. During a joint news conference in Cairo, both leaders emphasized the need for urgent action to halt the bloodshed and alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s inhabitants. Erdogan further expressed readiness to collaborate with Egypt in rebuilding Gaza once the conflict is resolved, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
