Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti: Significance and History

Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti is a day to honour the great warrior Guru Gobind Singh Ji on his Birth Anniversary

Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti is celebrated across India which holds special significance for the Sikhs. This day marks the birth anniversary of their tenth Sikh leader, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. This year, 20th January is the day to honour and remember the great warrior, poet, philosopher and spiritual master. 

History and Significance

Guru Gobind Singh was the son of Guru Tegh Bahadur who fought to protect the religious freedom of the Sikhs. According to the Gregorian Calendar, Singh Ji was born on 22nd December 1666, however, his birth anniversary is calculated according to the lunar calendar. This year his birth anniversary will be celebrated today with accordance to the lunar calendar. It is his 345th birth anniversary this year. 

His teachings and philosophy gained historical significance in the Sikh way of life. Khalsa was institutionalised by Singh Ji, who played a significant role in the protection of the Sikhs after his death and the nine invasions of Punjab

Celebrations

Sikhs across the world celebrate this day by going to the Gurudwaras. They attend special prayer meetings organized in honour of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. On this day, large processions go through the markets in India. There are various sevas and keertans organized at the Gurudwara on this day as well in which many people volunteer. They also distribute food among the poor people today.
