Opposition meeting to finalize strategy against Modi govt: Sitaram Yechury

The session will be presided over by Sonia Gandhi, the Congress’ acting president

NEW DELHIOn Friday, a virtual conference of key opposition leaders will be held to finalize a common strategy against the Modi government and to highlight a number of public-interest concerns, including price hikes, Pegasus spying, COVID-19 mismanagement, unemployment, and economic slowdown.

Sonia Gandhi, the interim president of the Congress, will preside over the meeting.

Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI(M), confirmed to news agency ANI that he will attend the meeting of opposition leaders convened by Sonia Gandhi.

‘Will discuss, finalize tactics to highlight issues faced by the general public’

Mr Yechury said they will discuss and finalize the tactics to highlight the issues faced by the general public, as well as matters that the government did not allow to be discussed in the Parliament’s monsoon session, which just ended.

“We must address issues that affect the ordinary citizen,” Yechury said, adding that COVID-19 mismanagement, vaccine shortages, economic downturn, unemployment, hunger, price hikes of vital goods, the farmers’ issue, government privatization strategy, and the Pegasus spying row are all on the table.

All of these concerns, as per him, were supposed to be debated in Parliament, but the administration refused to let it, so they are going to the public with these issues.

The CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury also said that the opposition leaders will debate and finalize a unified plan and expose the Modi government’s “real face”.

Key opposition leaders scheduled to attend the virtual meeting

Opposition leaders will meet virtually today under the chairmanship of Congress President Sonia Gandhi with key leaders, including three Chief Ministers: West Bengal’s Mamta Banerjee, Maharashtra’s Uddhav Thackeray, and Tamil Nadu’s M K Stalin.

The meeting is anticipated to include NCP President Sharad Pawar, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, and CPI General Secretary D Raja, among others.

The conference is part of the Congress’ efforts to bring together diverse opposition groups on important topics in order to build a platform for defeating the BJP in the forthcoming assembly elections in five states.

Opposition unified against the ruling party over key issues

The opposition parties demonstrated unanimity during the just-ended monsoon session of Parliament, causing both Houses to be disrupted.

The opposition leaders had requested a discussion on the Pegasus snooping row, as well as agricultural legislation and other matters, and had issued multiple Suspension of Business notices and Adjournment Motion Notices.

Pertinently, the government is seeking serious penalty against the members who engaged in disruptive behavior in the Upper House during the passage of the Insurance Amendment Bill, which is among the key issues of focus in today’s meeting held by the opposition leaders.
