Woman dies of heart attack allegedly during ‘night raid’ by police in Srinagar

As the local people protested against the elderly woman’s death, police said that they were conducted a ‘search operation’ in the area while they have no information of the lady’s death until the next morning

SRINAGAR (J&K)

An elderly woman died of a heart attack during a police raid at her home in the early hours of Thursday in the Habak neighbourhood of the capital city Srinagar, according to her relatives.

As per the deceased woman’s daughter Rubina, Khadija Bano (60) died at her home in the Mirakshah Colony in Habak area of the city when police allegedly attempted to detain her son, Javaid Ahmad, during a nocturnal raid on the intervening night of Wednesday-Thursday.

“At about 2:30 AM, there was a knock on the door. There were police officers searching for my brother when we opened the door,” Rubina further said.

She said that her mother and father attempted to resist Javaid’s detention by questioning that why was he being detained.

“My mother and I were pushed to the ground by the cops… After finding my mother motionless on the ground, they asked my brother to take care of her. However, they took away his mobile phone,” she claimed.

Even though his house is under the control of Police Station Nigeen, Javaid claims that when the policemen left, policemen asked him to come to Police Station Zakura.

Rubina added that her mother was rushed to the hospital but was found dead upon admission.

Attempts to get top police officers to comment on the charges were unsuccessful. However, a police officer on the condition of anonymity, said that a joint Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) of the police and the CRPF was conducted in Mirakshah Colony last night based on input on April 14.

“A search was carried out. Since the search was over, the search teams dispersed. It was learnt in the next morning that a lady named Khatija Putoo, who lived in the same neighbourhood, had died of a heart attack,” the police officer said, adding that the matter is being investigated by the police.

Meanwhile, massive protests erupted in Mirakshah Colony after the word spread that the woman died of a heart attack allegedly during a nocturnal police raid at her home.

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Mirakshah Colony, demanding that the “policemen” involved in the raid at the woman’s home be punished.
