In a significant announcement marking the sixtieth day of the Climate Fast in Ladakh, Sonam Wangchuk, the prominent figure spearheading the Climate Fast movement, has introduced the leaders of the Climate Fast Apex Body. At the forefront of the Climate Fast Apex Body stands Shri Thupstan Chhewang, affectionately known as the Gandhi of Ladakh. His political journey commenced in 1972 when he led the movement for Ladakh’s recognition as a centrally administered union territory. Despite facing adversity and enduring imprisonment, Chhewang remained resolute in his commitment to the region’s culture and environment. Under his stewardship, Ladakh witnessed remarkable advancements in education, with a notable surge in exam success rates. His steadfast advocacy for Ladakh’s autonomy culminated in the region’s designation as a union territory in 2019.
Another esteemed leader within Ladakh’s Apex Body is Chering Dorjay Lakruk Ji, renowned for his multifaceted service to the region. From serving as the inaugural youth president of the Ladakh Buddhist Association to holding positions as an MLA and cabinet minister in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Lakruk Ji’s tenure has been characterized by an unwavering dedication to Ladakh’s welfare.
