Sonam Wangchuk Enters Fifth Day of Climate Fast, Continues Peaceful Protest Amidst Freezing Temperatures

Amidst chilling temperatures, Sonam Wangchuk, the acclaimed education reformist from Ladakh, persists with his 21-day climate fast on the fifth consecutive day, advocating for the protection of Ladakh's indigenous culture and environment.

Ladakh: Sonam Wangchuk, renowned education reformist and prominent voice from Ladakh, has embarked on a 21-day fast to draw attention to the failure of talks between Ladakh representatives and the Union Home Ministry regarding the region’s safeguarding against industrial exploitation and the preservation of its indigenous culture.

Before commencing his fast, Wangchuk reiterated the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) 2019 election promise to bring Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule, given that 97% of Ladakh’s population comprises indigenous tribal communities. He emphasized the need to protect the region from potential threats posed by business interests, mining operations, and industrial developments.

Despite multiple rounds of discussions held in the national capital between Ladakh representatives and the Union Home Ministry, Wangchuk expressed disappointment, stating that these talks have yielded no progress. Representatives from the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and Leh Apex Body (LAB) also met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, but so far, there has been no breakthrough.

Wangchuk’s fasting initiative aims to draw parallels with Mahatma Gandhi’s peaceful methods during the freedom struggle. He highlighted the importance of self-sacrifice to urge government officials and policymakers to take prompt action on critical issues affecting Ladakh.

Taking to social media platform X, Wangchuk updated his followers on the progression of his fast. Braving extreme weather conditions with temperatures plummeting to -15°C and -17°C, Wangchuk persisted with his peaceful protest, joined by locals, including a 96-year-old man, monks, and shepherds from the Changthang border region.

Expressing concern over the lack of media attention towards Ladakh’s plight, Wangchuk urged the public to spread awareness and support the cause. He called upon individuals to organize one-day fasts in solidarity with Ladakh and emphasized the importance of preserving trust within Indian society.

Ladakh, which saw the BJP’s victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, has become a focal point in the debate over indigenous rights and environmental conservation. Wangchuk’s steadfast commitment to his cause underscores the urgency of addressing the region’s challenges and upholding promises made to its inhabitants.

As Wangchuk continues his fast, his determination serves as a beacon of hope for Ladakh’s indigenous communities and advocates of environmental sustainability across the nation.
