The Population Control Bill aims at controlling the population growth of India by introducing a two-child policy per couple.

The Population Control Bill has been the talk of the day on social media as netizens are raging with the hashtag #WeWantPopulationControlLaw. The infamous Population Control Bill, introduced in the Rajya Sabha in July 2019 by MP Rakesh Sinha aims at controlling the population growth of India. The bill was signed by 125 other MPs but is yet to become an act of law.

The Constitution (Amendment) Bill introduced by Shiv Sena MP Anil Desai on 7 February 2020 proposed the introduction of a two-child policy per couple and aimed incentivization through various measures. The 2019 bill also speaks about penalising the couples who don’t adhere to the two-child policy. The penalties include debarment from contesting in elections as well as ineligibility for government jobs.

The State shall promote small family norms by offering incentives in taxes, employment, education etc. to its people who keep their family limited to two children and shall withdraw every concession from and deprive such incentives to those not adhering to the small family norm, to keep the growing population under control.
