Kolkatta, India: Distinguished scientists and leaders convened at the inauguration of the 5-day International Conference organized by the SN Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS) in Kolkata. Professor Ajay Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, highlighted the ongoing second revolution in quantum mechanics and emphasized the diminishing gap between fundamental science and technological intervention.
With a total investment of 750 million USD across four verticals, the conference shed light on the burgeoning opportunities in quantum science and technology. Professor Sood outlined key areas like quantum sensing, satellite-based quantum communications, and post-quantum cryptography as focal points for researchers. He emphasized India’s significant role in the global quantum landscape, especially in quantum algorithms.
Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Prof. Abhay Karandikar, stressed the importance of the National Quantum Mission (NQM) and its potential for international collaboration. He announced the establishment of four mission hubs across the country, encouraging technical experts to collaborate in consortium mode.
The yearlong celebration, organized by SNBNCBS, includes three International Conferences and various Outreach Programmes. Prof. Tanusri Saha-Dasgupta, Director of S.N. Bose National Centre, highlighted the historic importance of Satyendra Nath Bose’s seminal paper, published in 1924, which laid the foundation for modern quantum technologies.
Satyendra Nath Bose’s pioneering work on quantum statistics, including the Bose-Einstein condensation, quantum superconductivity, and quantum information theory, has left an enduring impact on the field. The celebration aims to bring together experts, including Nobel laureates, to exchange ideas and foster a deeper understanding of quantum mechanics. The Outreach Programmes will contribute to popularizing science and creating awareness about the Second Quantum Revolution.
As the conference unfolds, it serves as a testament to Bose’s colossal work in theoretical physics, shaping the trajectory of quantum advancements for the last century and beyond.
