Africa Day 2023 – Message from Madagascar Mission in India

The Embassy of Madagascar in New Delhi is proud to celebrate Africa Day in India and wish us all a Happy Africa Day! On this day we pay tribute to the creation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on 25th May 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia which has now become the African Union. As we celebrate the achievements and potential of Africa, which is a major player in global development, thanks to its natural, human and cultural resources; we acknowledge Africa’s journey since 1963 and proclaim “Our Africa Our Future”.

In 60 years, Africa has made significant progress in advancing its vision for Africa’s transformation. We have demonstrated our resilience and adaptability in our responses to  global issues and crises and we resolve to pursue all efforts to meet the noble aspirations of all African people.

As a founding member state of the pan-African organisation OAU, Madagascar is proud of its belonging and its role towards an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa. It is a sense of belonging built on a shared history of common struggle against colonialism, apartheid and discrimination; it is a solidarity rooted in the shared ideal of a just and fair world system, it is a belonging animated by the legitimate aspiration to build the Africa Africans want. Madagascar adheres to the vision of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa. Madagascar also contributes to the richness and diversity of African heritage through its attachment to Fihavanana – the Malagasy concept of solidarity, mutual respect and harmony,  and its unique biodiversity, music, gastronomy and traditions. We engaged in regional and continental cooperation, particularly through the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Indian Ocean Commission. Madagascar is committed to the implementation of Agenda 2063, the strategic framework for the development of the African continent, such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and the Comprehensive Programme for the Development of African Agriculture.

Throughout this journey, Africa recognises India’s role as a highly valued friend, an economic partner, a provider of development support, and a leading country for maritime security. if 60 years ago many African countries considered India as an important ally to counterbalance colonial pressure, today India is the key partner for African countries like Madagascar. So, as we celebrate Africa Day 2023 and wish long life to the solidarity among African countries, we wish as well a long and prosperous cooperation between African nations and India. Thank you.
