As we commemorate Africa Day, it is an honor to extend heartfelt greetings to all African Brothers and Sisters as well as friends of Africa. This day, observed on May 25th, marks the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, which was later transformed into the African Union (AU). It is a momentous occasion to reflect on our shared history, cultural heritage, and collective aspirations for a prosperous future.

Africa Day is a testament to the unity, resilience, and strength of our continent. It is a day to celebrate the rich diversity that makes Africa unique, from the vibrant cultures and languages to the breathtaking landscapes and abundant natural resources. It is also a day to honor the spirit of Pan-Africanism that continues to inspire and guide us towards greater solidarity and cooperation.

Ethiopia, as a founding member of the OAU and host nation of the African Union headquarter, has always been a beacon of African unity and independence. Our country’s historical and moral commitment to the principles of African solidarity and independence is exemplified through our active participation in the establishment of the OAU. Ethiopia’s unwavering support for liberation movements across the continent and its dedication to peacekeeping efforts underscore our belief in a free, peaceful, and prosperous Africa.

On this Africa Day, we reaffirm our dedication to the ideals of the African Union Agenda 2063 – “The Africa We Want.” This visionary framework, aligned with this year’s theme of “Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century,” aspires to foster inclusive growth, sustainable development, and a politically united and influential Africa on the global stage. By investing in education, technology, and entrepreneurship, we can unlock the potential of our youth, who are the driving force behind our continent’s progress.

In celebrating Africa Day 2024, we are reminded of the enduring words of Emperor Haile Selassie I at the founding of the OAU: “History teaches us that unity is strength and cautions us to submerge and overcome our differences in the quest for common goals, to strive, with all our combined strength, for path to true African brotherhood and unity.” These words resonate today as we strive to transcend our differences and work towards a united and prosperous Africa.

The vision of the African Union encapsulates our aspirations for a brighter tomorrow—an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena. Let us seize this moment to recommit ourselves to this noble vision and work hand in hand to build a better future for generations to come.

    Happy Africa Day!
