Shaktimaan in a modern-day garb; Will makers be able to keep up with viewers’ expectations?

With Om Raut roped in to helm the reincarnation of Shaktimaan, film buffs will look for some thrilling desi super hero action on screen

A few years after Doordarshan made its advent, the Indian television audiences were presented with one of the most thrilling stories. The kids had a frolicking time watching Shaktimaan, as the truly desi super hero fought his way into villain’s dens to establish justice.
Now after so many years since Shaktimaan’s debut and his subsequent disappearance, the kids of today, and of course the grownups who grew up watching Shaktimaan and his exploits, are set to have a modern day version of the iconic super hero on the big screen.

The grapevine had earlier hinted at the reincarnation of Shaktimaan on the silver screen, but after a few news snippets, the story seemed to have died down. However, talk of the new Shaktimaan film is back again on cyberspace and it looks like the people behind the production are seriously thinking of a mega project that would do justice to viewers’ expectations.

Om Raut roped in as director; Ranveer might play Shaktimaan

The latest we hear on Shaktimaan is that it would be directed by filmmaker Om Raut. The director had been in the news earlier for his Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, a period flick. Shaktimaan is expected to be a VFX-rider and Om Raut is seen a s the bet to helm the project. Earlier, Sony Pictures International Productions had bought the film adaptation rights of Shaktimaan, and it was reported that the film will be of three parts, as only a trilogy would do justice to the iconic super hero character that had been lapped up by the adults of today when they used to be kids looking for some class entertainment on Doordarshan.

Reimagining Shaktimaan for the new age

Reimagining the story of Shaktimaan will not be a simple task, as the super hero has already set high benchmarks. It would be foolish to assume that a superhero venture in oft-tried out templates would work with the audiences. It indeed would need some great thinking and a great story line that would match the modern day parameters of film viewing.

As if to make things look rosy and serious, the producers are said to have roped in Ranveer Singh to play Shaktimaan. It may be recalled that yesteryear actor Mukesh Khanna had made quite an impact by playing Shaktimaan years ago, and it would need Ranveer to research and learn the character before jumping into scene.  Going his recent portrayals of a variety of characters, Ranveer indeed has the potential to carry Shaktimaan on his shoulders to much effect.
