Japan Commits To Strengthening Global Partnerships And Indo-Pacific Strategy At India-Japan Forum 2023

New Delhi, India – July 30, 2023 – Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, addressed a distinguished audience at the India-Japan Forum in New Delhi today, laying out a comprehensive vision for an inclusive future under Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) strategy.

In an address marked by its future-focused optimism, Minister Hayashi noted the significance of 2023 as the year in which Japan and India take on the G7 and G20 presidencies, respectively. “The leadership of our two nations, particularly in these high-stakes international forums, will shape the global conversation around numerous critical issues,” Hayashi stated.

He underlined the importance of enhanced international engagement with the “Global South”, building on outcomes from the G7 Hiroshima Summit. Hayashi affirmed Japan’s commitment to addressing challenges in food security, development, health, and climate change, emphasizing the necessity for stronger cooperation among nations.

A key theme of Hayashi’s address was the bolstering of the Japan-India partnership under the FOIP strategy, which underscores a free, fair, and inclusive international order. Hayashi cited the potential for India’s northeastern region and the Bay of Bengal area to play a pivotal role in realizing this vision.

According to Hayashi, “Our joint efforts will be seen in numerous fields, including politics, security, economics, development cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges. India is an indispensable partner in this endeavor.”

In his address, Hayashi also committed Japan’s support for the success of the G20 New Delhi Summit. “Japan will continue to work with India in the spirit of harmony and coordination for a better future for our region,” he stated, further reinforcing Japan’s dedication to promoting cooperation over division and confrontation.

The Minister’s address underscored the dynamic evolution of Japan’s foreign policy in an era of shifting geopolitical realities. It signaled Japan‘s readiness to work closely with India and other partners to shape a harmonious and prosperous future.
