Over 80 Hospitalized in Zambia Due to Suspected Food Poisoning from Shawarma

Zambia: In a concerning turn of events, more than 80 individuals have been admitted to various health facilities in Chililabombwe Town, located in the Copperbelt area of Zambia, due to suspected food poisoning linked to the consumption of shawarma. The incident, which occurred on April 7, has prompted urgent investigations into the matter.

Copperbelt Province Police Commissioner, Peacewell Mweemba, issued a statement revealing that the victims had all consumed shawarma purchased from a specific restaurant in Chililabombwe. The affected individuals began experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea shortly after consuming the snack.

“At one hospital alone, 53 people were admitted with complaints related to the consumption of shawarma,” stated Commissioner Mweemba. “Additionally, patients with similar symptoms were admitted to other health facilities in the area.”

The police, upon receiving reports from health workers, swiftly intervened and conducted assessments at several medical centers. At Grace Clinic, 10 patients were found admitted, while Lubengele Clinic had three admissions, and Konkola Mine Hospital reported 14 admissions, bringing the total number of affected individuals to over 80.

Commissioner Mweemba assured the public that the condition of the admitted patients was stable. Meanwhile, the owner of the restaurant implicated in the incident, identified as Bright Chileshe, has been apprehended to aid in the ongoing investigation.

“Chililabombwe businessman Bright Chileshe has been picked up to assist with investigations,” confirmed Commissioner Mweemba. “Authorities are working diligently to ascertain the cause of this health crisis and ensure accountability.”

As authorities delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the suspected food poisoning outbreak, concerns regarding food safety and hygiene standards have been raised. The incident underscores the importance of rigorous monitoring and regulation within the food service industry to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
