IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Warnings Across India

Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka brace for extremely heavy rains as IMD forecasts widespread downpours across northwest, central, and east India.

Public advised to stay vigilant amid warnings of severe weather, with potential flooding and disruptions expected in affected areas over the next few days.

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued significant weather warnings, forecasting isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Kerala, adjoining Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka over the next few days.

Forecast Details:

  1. Isolated Extremely Heavy Rainfall:
    • Kerala and adjoining Tamil Nadu on 30th July.
    • Karnataka on 30th and 31st July.
  2. Fairly Widespread to Widespread Rainfall:
    • Northwest, central, and east India are expected to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls over the next 4-5 days.

    • Kerala and Mahe.
    • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and South Interior Karnataka.
  • Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall:
    • Isolated places over Gujarat Region, Konkan & Goa, Coastal Karnataka, Madhya Maharashtra.
  • Heavy Rainfall:
    • Telangana, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, North Interior Karnataka, West Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan, West Rajasthan, Saurashtra & Kutch, Haryana, East Madhya Pradesh.

Weather Systems:

  • Monsoon Trough:
    • Active and south of its normal position at mean sea level, expected to shift gradually northwards in the next 4-5 days.
  • Cyclonic Circulation:
    • Over Jharkhand and surrounding areas in lower and middle tropospheric levels, tilting southwards with height.
  • Off-shore Trough:
    • Runs along the South Gujarat to Kerala coast at mean sea level.
  • Cyclonic Circulation:
    • Over northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Saurashtra in lower and middle tropospheric levels, tilting southwards with height.

West & Central India:

  • Rainfall:
    • Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over the next 5 days.
  • Extremely Heavy Rainfall:
    • Madhya Maharashtra from 1st to 3rd August.
  • Very Heavy Rainfall:
    • Konkan & Goa from 30th July to 3rd August.
    • Madhya Maharashtra on 30th and 31st July.
    • Gujarat State on 30th July.
    • West Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh from 1st to 3rd August.
    • East Madhya Pradesh from 31st July to 3rd August.
    • Vidarbha on 2nd August.

The IMD urges the public to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions in affected regions. The heavy rains could lead to localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions in daily life.
