December 18, 2019, New Delhi, India–
“The First Temptation Of Christ”, is a new Netflix Christmas Special movie, which has made millions of people angry all over the world because it shows Jesus Christ in a gay relationship and Mary as a weed-smoker. Due to this people have signed petition demanding its withdrawal.
In India, too, the Christian community has demanded an apology from the Netflix and has said the show should be removed immediately from Netflix all across the globe.
Dr Abraham Mathai, the President of Indian Christian Voice said “As a member of the Christian community and follower of Christ, had endorsed the protest of the 1.5 million-plus who had registered their protests calling for the withdrawal of the First Temptation of Christ, a series depicting Jesus in a gay relationship. Even though freedom of expression is a fundamental and constitutional right, but using the same liberty to offend our sentiments is highly abhorrent and unacceptable”.
Belittling and negating Jesus, a person who turned the world right-side up with his exemplary character and impeccable integrity should not be entertained under any circumstances. The message and teachings of Christ are relevant even today, as evidenced by the billions of followers worldwide who congregate week after week throughout generations in reverential adoration to His holy name. Jesus remains unequalled by any historical figure universally to date that even history itself in ultimate recognition is divided into two eras – Before Christ (BC) and After Death (AD Anno Domini – In the year of the Lord). Our failure in the past to register our protest tangibly has emboldened such profanity and sacrilege on the deity of Christ not once but repeatedly. In 2018, the same comedy group released the television special ‘The Last Hangover’ which depicted Jesus and his disciples drunk during their final meal together.
He further added, the current series offered as a Christmas Special is blasphemous, vulgar and disrespectful and should have been pulled off immediately after the initial protest as it is severe and highly offensive to our Christian faith. The Christmas Special titled “The First Temptation of Christ” is an abomination that implies that a homosexual was the central pillar of the Christian faith under the pretext of parody. And because of such an offensive and reckless act of abomination, we demanded that this horrific depiction of Christ be withdrawn, and Netflix offer an unconditional apology to the Christian community for hurting our sentiments.
Dr Mathai also wrote an open letter to the Netflix CEO – Mr Reed Hastings, asking to take the movie down. However, the protests have not been heard, and the 48 hours have elapsed since the ultimatum he had given to Netflix. So Dr Mathai says, it’s time to accelerate the disapproval by carrying it to its logical end by taking tangible action. While we may enjoy Netflix as a source of entertainment, the question we must ask ourselves is, do we want to utilize a medium that degrades the name of Christ? Jesus implores us, his followers, to boldly acknowledge Him to the people in the world, and the failure to do so amounts to being ashamed of Him and His name. (Matthew 10:32, 33) (Mark 8:38) (Luke 9:26).
Dr Mathai appeal’s to the Christian community to make your voice heard by unsubscribing Netflix account as he has done that too. He believes that during this Christmas season, it would be hypocritical to turn a blind eye to these matters and yet celebrate the birth of Christ.
