30 lakh Govt officials to be imparted training in emerging technologies

Civil servants across the country will be trained to adopt and use emerging technologies such as AI, ML and Blockchain

With a view towards bringing in effective governance and service delivery at the grassroots level, the Union Government will impart training on emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Blockchain to over 30 lakh officials.

The training will be kicked off through the Central Training Institutions (CTIs), State level Administrative Training Institutions (ATIs) and the Integrated Government Online Training-Mission Karmayogi for the benefit of around 30 lakh government officials at the state and Central levels. According to Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science & Technology, the training will be imparted by year 2023.

The 25 Central Training Institutions, 33 State level Administrative Training Institutions and other civil service training institutions along with Capacity Building Commission along with the Wadhwani Institute of Technology and Policy (WITP), will jointly undertake the task of training the government officials in the emerging technologies.

Knowledge of emerging technologies to come handy in administrative processes

It is being foreseen that the civil servants who are imparted the training would be able to deploy these technologies in their day to day work and administrative processes. While detection of fraud in GST, filing of income tax returns etc would be possible through AI and Machine Learning, the knowledge of Blockchain technologies would help officials to secure records and certificates and help in data-driven decision making through use of analytics, said the minister.

With technology proving handy enough during uncertain times and changing governance issues, its adoption is seen as imperative.  According to Dr Singh, the government though has been playing a delicate balancing role between using and promoting technologies, it becomes crucial that civil servants, as the decision makers at the forefront, should realise the potentials and fallacies of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Data analytics. Civil servants need to just understand how, why, and where to use these technologies.

A welcome move from the part of the Govt

The training process would deal with Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Internet of Things, Augmented Reality & Virtual Reality, Data Analytics, Drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Blockchain.

The Union government’s decision comes as a welcome move, considering that the world has been changing at a rapid pace both the advent of the new age technologies. With civil servants well versed in these technologies of the modern world, it would indeed add the much needed strength in all official matters that concerns the common man as well as the administration.
