A name isn’t just a name. It’s more than a name. Don’t agree? Ask Amrinder

Media tweets on Punjab politics tag the footballer Amrinder instead of the Captain Amarinder; Twitter goes berserk

What’s in a name? Ask Amrinder Singh, and he would tell you there indeed is a lot in a name. Before you jump to conclusions, let’s tell you, the Amrinder Singh we are talking about here is not Amarinder Singh, the former Chief Minister of Punjab!  The man in question here is Amrinder Singh, the star goalkeeper of the Indian Football team.

Yes, you noticed it right. The man in the limelight has his name spelt without the ‘a’, and he is Amrinder, while the man also known as Captain is Amarinder Singh.

Amrinder Singh, the footballer, is an irked man at the moment. The reason, all the Twitter limelight is on him, and for the wrong reason.

Media persons in the country, who hop on to Twitter and other social media platforms at the drop of the hat to air their views on developing news breaks and speculations, are currently making life difficult for Amrinder Singh the football player.

As Twitter witnessed a barrage of news snippets related to Punjab politics on the micro-blogging platform, Amrinder was wrongly tagged by many journalists, not realising that the footballer was tagged in place of the former Chief Minister who resigned a couple of days ago. Soon after Punjab Congress Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu also tendered his resignation, many media professionals went about tweeting and they made it a point to tag the Amrinder handle they first saw.

Amrinder and Amarinder tweet in response

Amrinder, the footballer, was of course irritated. He also took to Twitter clarifying thus: Dear News Media, Journalists, I am Amrinder Singh, Goalkeeper of Indian Football Team and not the Former Chief Minister of the State Punjab. Please stop tagging me.

The real Amarinder Singh also responded to footballer Amrinder Singh’s desperate tweet. He tweeted: I empathise with you, my young friend. Good luck with your games ahead.

Soon after these tweets went viral, Twitterati too decided to go berserk with funny comments galore. All said the wrong tagging seems to be continuing. Clarification or not, things are bound to be so on social media. And when people dive into topics to voice their opinion hastily, things like this are bound to happen. It’s a crazy world out there on social space.
