Taiwan’s MOFA Condemns China’s Provocative Military Drills, Urges Global Support for Democracy

Taiwan urges China to cease military provocations and act responsibly following its latest drills near the Taiwan Strait, emphasizing the need for global unity in defending democratic values.

MOFA denounces China’s Joint Sword-2024B exercises as a threat to regional stability, calls for united international response to protect peace and freedom in the Indo-Pacific.

In a strongly worded statement, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) condemned China’s latest military drills, accusing Beijing of undermining regional peace and stability. On October 14, China launched the Joint Sword-2024B military exercise around Taiwan, a move MOFA describes as a violation of the rules-based international order and an escalation of tensions in the Taiwan Strait. The ministry called on China to immediately halt its provocative actions.

The military drills follow Taiwan’s National Day address, in which President Lai Ching-te reiterated Taiwan’s goodwill towards China and called for peaceful dialogue to maintain the status quo of stability and prosperity in the region. However, MOFA criticized China’s continued attempts to intimidate Taiwan through military displays, accusing it of trying to disrupt the peace and threaten Taiwan’s democratic values.

China’s aggressive military actions not only jeopardize Taiwan’s security but also pose a significant threat to the broader region,” MOFA stated, calling on the international community to recognize China’s authoritarian and expansionist ambitions.

The ministry urged nations worldwide to take a firm stand in supporting Taiwan’s democracy, freedom, and sovereignty. MOFA emphasized the importance of safeguarding the Indo-Pacific’s rules-based international order and promoting peace, openness, and prosperity in the region.

“At this critical moment, democratic nations must unite to protect the values of freedom and democracy that Taiwan upholds,” MOFA concluded, calling on China to cease its provocations and act responsibly to preserve peace in the region.
