Many Killed and Injured in Israeli Attack on al Mawasi Camp in Gaza
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has left over 40,000 Palestinians dead and 94,000 injured, with the latest airstrike further complicating humanitarian efforts in the region.
Hamas rejects Israeli military’s claims of targeting a command center, calling it a “clear lie” to justify civilian casualties.
Southern Gaza witnessed another tragic escalation as an Israeli airstrike targeted the al-Mawasi camp near Khan Younis, resulting in the death of at least 40 Palestinians and injuring 60 others. The assault comes amid the ongoing conflict that has gripped the region, intensifying the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The Israeli military claimed that the airstrike targeted a Hamas command center within the encampment. However, Hamas swiftly denied these allegations, calling the military’s claims a “clear lie” intended to justify what they termed as “ugly crimes” against civilians. In a statement, Hamas emphasized that they have repeatedly refuted the presence of their members within civilian gatherings or the use of humanitarian zones for military purposes.
The attack on al-Mawasi comes at a time when Gaza’s civilian population is already bearing the brunt of continuous bombardments, with the toll of casualties rising exponentially. According to reports, the ongoing war has claimed the lives of at least 40,988 Palestinians, with over 94,825 injured since the conflict’s escalation. The situation has also had devastating effects on Israel, with the death toll from the October 7 Hamas-led attacks standing at 1,139, and more than 200 people being held captive.
The strike on the al-Mawasi camp has also raised concerns over the status of critical humanitarian operations in Gaza. The UN’s polio vaccination campaign in northern Gaza, which was scheduled to commence on Tuesday, remains uncertain after Israeli soldiers detained UN staff at gunpoint and Israeli bulldozers damaged UN vehicles, according to UNRWA Chief Philippe Lazzarini.
As the conflict continues, the international community watches with growing concern, calling for a ceasefire and the protection of civilian lives amidst the escalating violence in the region.
