The League of Arab States convenes an emergency session, calls for immediate support to Lebanon amidst the escalating Israeli offensive.
Arab League Urges UN to Enforce Ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza, Warns of Growing Regional Instability
New Delhi: An extraordinary session was held on October 3, 2024, where the League of Arab States, at the level of permanent representatives, expressed full support for the member states’ solidarity and called for urgent assistance to Lebanon in light of the ongoing Israeli aggression. This was especially critical after the events of September 23, 2024, as the country faces emergency needs arising from the displacement of over one million internally displaced persons, a direct consequence of the aggression.
The League unequivocally condemns the ongoing barbaric Israeli aggression against Lebanon, stressing the imperative for its immediate cessation. It warns of the grave consequences of continued aggression, which poses a serious threat to the security and stability of the region’s peoples, and views any infiltration or occupation of Lebanese lands as an assault on Arab national security.
It reaffirms support for Lebanon’s position and its ongoing efforts to communicate with the international community to pressure Israel into halting its aggression against Lebanon. The League calls for the immediate enforcement of a ceasefire, in preparation for committing Israel to fully implementing international resolutions, particularly Resolution 1701, in collaboration with the Lebanese army and peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon. Furthermore, the Security Council must assume its responsibility to end Israel’s land, sea, and air assaults on Lebanese sovereignty and ensure the complete cessation of its occupation of Lebanese territories. Lebanon retains the right to confront and resist this aggression by all legitimate means.
Moreover, the Arab League Mission in New Delhi strongly condemns the ongoing escalation of Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, West Bank, and Lebanon, which flagrantly violate international and humanitarian law. These aggressive actions, targeting civilians and breaching the sovereignty of neighboring countries, have created a highly volatile situation with far-reaching regional implications. The attacks are unfolding amidst unprecedented international silence and a troubling paralysis within the UN Security Council, which is failing in its duty to maintain international peace and security.
The Israeli government’s deliberate policies of starvation and deprivation—denying Palestinians access to basic necessities such as food, water, and medical supplies—constitute collective punishment and gross violations of human rights. The international community must act swiftly to address these ongoing atrocities.
The Arab League also expresses deep concern over Israel’s aggressive actions in Lebanon, which not only violate Lebanese sovereignty but also pose a grave risk of sparking a wider regional conflict. The current escalation threatens to destabilize the region, and the world must act now to prevent a repetition of the Gaza tragedy in Lebanon.
We call on the UN Security Council to fulfill its obligations in maintaining international peace and security and implementing relevant resolutions, including Resolution 2735, which calls for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza. Furthermore, the international community must prevent the spread of this war to the West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem, and ensure compliance with the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion on the illegality of Israel’s occupation.
The Arab League also warns against the continued impunity of Israel and affirms the necessity of holding it accountable for its crimes through national and international judicial processes. We support the legal efforts of the State of Palestine at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), calling on the ICC to expedite its investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Israeli officials. The criminal perpetrators must be brought to international justice.
The people of the region, including both Palestinians and Israelis, desire to live in peace and coexistence. The Arab League remains steadfast in its support for the two-state solution as a path toward lasting peace, in line with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions. We urge the international community to intensify efforts to facilitate this solution and respect the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood.
The Arab League calls on friendly countries, including India, and the international community—particularly major global powers—to assume their responsibilities and act immediately to prevent this slide toward a broader regional war. The UN Security Council must take decisive action to preserve international peace and security. The world must act swiftly to ensure the protection of Palestinian and Lebanese civilians and to uphold the principles of justice, human dignity, and international law.
