Muslims help perform last rites of centenarian Kashmiri Pandit in Kashmir

Being the lone Pandit family in the village, Pandit Kanth Ram and his family share a strong bond with their Muslim neighbours.

In an gesture depicting communal harmony and brotherhood among two distinct religious communities, the Muslims living in southern Kashmir helped perform the last rites of a Kashmir Pandit.

According to local people, who mourned his death along with Pandit community, in Zainapora village of Shopian district, the Pandit man was aged 110 and died after brief illness at his home. The local residents identified the deceased as Pandit Kanth Ram son of Anant Ram.

Being the lone Pandit family in the village, Pandit Kanth Ram and his family share a strong bond with their Muslim neighbours.

“We used to visit each other and spent some quality time together. He was my friend and a noble soul. I feel really saddened over his death,” a local resident, Abdul Gafar, said.

As soon as the news of Kanth Ram’s death spread in the locality, the local Muslims visited the family and expressed condolences with them. Many youth also made arrangements in performing his last rites including carrying firewood for the slain’s cremation.

Pertinently, the deceased left behind his lone son Ramesh Kumar, a doctor by profession and four daughters, who are all settled.
